Identification and history
Name: Margot
Report and medical history: Dog, Yorkshire Terrier, Female, 1 year old.
The patient presented with vomiting and diarrhoea while on heat. Haemorrhagic vomiting and diarrhoea persisted after sterilisation.
Diagnostics
The liver ultrasound image shows diffuse hyperechogenic spots, indicating the presence of air.
Abdominal ultrasound of the hepatic portal vessels shows the passage of air bubbles in these vessels.
This ultrasound scan shows an intestinal ulcer on the verge of perforation.
Images were acquired with the MyLab™9VET system.
Conclusions and treatment:
Laura Martinelli, DVM, MSc - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Milan, Italy.
The ultrasound scan showed the presence of gas in the hepatic area caused by multiple gastric and intestinal ulcers that allowed air to enter the portal system. Treatment consisted of the prescription of highly digestible food and gastro protectants (omeprazole and sulcrafate). The patient recovered over the course of one month.
